The Special National Monument Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam
The Temple of Literature is located in the south of the ancient Thang Long citadel. It has been recognized as a special national relic under the decision No. 548/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister in May 12th 2012. Khue Van Cac was selected as the symbol of the Capital and 82 steles of Doctorate at the Temple of Literature were recognized by UNESCO as a Documentary Heritage and inscribed in the List of World Documentary Records. These have shown that the Temple of Literature is not only a valuable asset of the capital and of Vietnam, but it has also become an asset and a cultural heritage of mankind. Over the years, the Temple of Literature has become a spiritual relic site, a symbol of wisdom and studiousness, and has received special attention from the authorities at all levels, helping it become a relic that can attract domestic and overseas tourists.
The architectural complex of the Temple of Literature includes: the Van lake, the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam area and the Giam garden with the main architecture being Van Mieu, a place to worship Confucius and Quoc Tu Giam, the first university of Vietnam.
The Temple of Literature is surrounded by brick walls. The interior is divided into 5 different architechural spaces. Each space is limited by brick walls with 3 connecting doors (including one main entrance and two side doors). Going in further, there are also the Van Mieu gate, the Dai Trung gate, the Dai Thanh gate and the Thai Hoc gate. After over 700 years, it has trained thousands of talents for the country. Now, Van Mieu-Quoc Tu Giam is not a place to visit for domestic and foreign tourists, but also a place to honor excellent students and to organize an annual poetry festival on the full moon day of the first lunar month. And on Lunar New Year or before exams, the students often come to ask for caligraphy from scholars to pray for luck.
Currently, the Temple of Literature is an attractive cultural tourist destination for tourists, making strong contributions to the development in all aspects of the capital and the whole country. Since 1962, the relic has been designated by the Ministry of Culture as a national relic and is now a special national Monument. The 82 steles inside have been honored by Unesco as a world documentary heritage. Hanoi has always paid special care to it in order to manage, protect and promote its values. In 1988, Hanoi has established the Van Mieu - Quoc Tu Giam Cultural and Scientific Research Centre, designed to directly manage the cultural complex. Currently, all the main architectural buildings in the monument have been restored to conserve, to promote values and to boost tourism for Hanoi and Vietnam.
